Cynthia Martinez
Independent Director - Puerto Rico
As a girl, Cynthia Martinez collected candy from broken piñatas at birthday parties and sold it to her friends, making a “sweet” profit. She’s still in sales, but has graduated from candy to skin care. “Since I was a little girl, I’ve always wanted to be a businesswoman,” says Cynthia, an Independent Director with BeautiControl®.
As much as Cynthia loves the business world, her first love is acting. She had it all planned out. She would go to college, do some modeling, work to pay the bills and somehow find a way to open her own production studio. But life has a way of changing your plans. Cynthia’s interest in acting led to a modeling job, which led her to the person who introduced her to BeautiControl. Cynthia remembers telling her BeautiControl director, “My goals are to open my own performing arts school and have my own production company. I have some savings, but it’s not enough.” Her director explained that her BeautiControl business could help, “He told me, ‘You have to take this a step further, Cynthia. You’re really good at doing BeautiControl. You have a lot of opportunities,’” she says.
Cynthia decided to give her business a chance. She held Spa Escapes® and realized BeautiControl offered something her part-time modeling job didn’t: flexibility and the opportunity to grow professionally on her own terms. “I think the wonderful thing about BeautiControl is you decide when you’re going to do it,” she says. “It isn’t decided for you. You promote yourself.”
a roller coaster ride
Cynthia decided she was ready to promote herself to the position of director and met several challenges along the way. During the qualification process, her mom had several surgeries, was diagnosed with cancer and treated with chemotherapy. Cynthia was in a serious car accident and injured her right hand—the one she used to write down BeautiControl orders.
Her family joined in to help her out. “I took orders on the phone and my mom wrote everything down, my boyfriend calculated my inventory orders and my dad called my cousins to explain—and sell—products,” she says. “Even my grandmother talked to people about the BeautiControl opportunity. And I was doing my part talking with my new consultants and keeping my team motivated.”
Cynthia had barely recovered from her accident when she had a dental condition that made it difficult for her to talk. Once again her family pitched in to help. This time, her mom did the talking and Cynthia did the writing. “And it was a great experience, because I recruited my own mother,” Cynthia says.
A month later, her mother required a long hospitalization. Cynthia adapted by dividing her time between the hospital, her university classes and home. She continued to build her BeautiControl business by holding Spa Escapes at the hospital and taking samples to the nurses. “My dad works an eight-hour job. My sister works an eight-hour job. And I do a lot of activities,” Cynthia says. “Not having the obligation of going to a job gave me the time to take care of my mom, to be there for her.
sharing the happiness
Cynthia looks back on the process of becoming a director with pride and amazement. She succeeded and has found financial freedom, which allowed her to fulfill her goal of opening a production studio. “All the time I was at the hospital, I was doing my job,” she says. “And I still earned great commission checks and made good money selling the products.” Her experience helps when working with other women who may be facing life challenges. “I get to know them, I learn about their work and their problems,” she says. “Being a director has given me the opportunity to meet wonderful people.”
Cynthia appreciates that her business allows her to be with her mother, despite the challenges of juggling her college coursework and family obligations. Cynthia had good role models for putting her family first. Her parents place a high priority on the family, and she is grateful that BeautiControl allows her to do the same. “I admire my parents a lot and tell them, ‘You’re my superheroes,’ ” she says. “Even though they used to work so much, their family was still a priority. I used to wonder when I was a little kid, ‘Cynthia, you want to do a lot of things. How are you going to spend time with your family?’ Now I know how.”
